SS Great Britain – Problem Solved

The SS Great Britain was a world first when she was launched in Bristol in 1843. This uniquely successful ship design brought together new technologies in a way which transformed world travel, and is now transforming the future of exhibition experiences.

Working as key technology supplier to, Filtration Ltd, atg UV Technology has played a significant role in an £11.3m restoration project of the SS Great Britain. The world's first all-iron ship, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The SS Great Britain is now housed in a specially customised dry dock in Bristol and forms part of an impressive exhibition open to the public.

Visitors descend under a ‘glass sea' to stand below the ship's hull and propeller, allowing audiences to see the SS Great Britain in her full glory. The glass sea, designed and installed by Filtration Ltd is a highly sophisticated water feature that gives the illusion from the dock side that the ship is floating in the water, and has received excellent reviews by visitors and media alike.

However, after a few short weeks of its operation, the glass sea feature, which was relying on chlorination as its primary disinfectant was becoming increasingly murky and opaque, effectively ruining a key feature of the exhibition. Due to unpredictable levels of micro-organisms, large amounts of algae had begun to thrive within the body of water that creates the ‘floating ship' illusion.

Working closely with Filtration Ltd, atg UV Technology quickly designed and manufactured a multi lamp low pressure UVL system that could be easily integrated within the current plant room, avoiding any un-necessary building work.

The atg UV low pressure system was perfectly suited for this application, and within just days the problem algae had been completely removed. Additionally the water was now clearer than to begin with and importantly free from any harmful micro-organisms such as legionella and cryptosporidium.

The UVL system comprises a high quality UVL multi lamp reactor with a fully integrated NOVA control system. Automatic wipers were included to prevent the build-up of deposits on the quartz tube, and UV monitoring to ensure the systems consistently run at an optimum level.
