UV Technology

UV TechnologyJust over 100 years ago German scientists discovered that the top surface of lake-water was sterile when exposed to sunlight. Investigation led to the discovery of Ultraviolet light. Situated in the electro-magnetic spectrum between X-rays and visible light, Ultraviolet (UV) light has many beneficial properties.

UV is split into four main categories, UV-A, UV-B, UV-C and Vacuum UV. The area between 240 and 280 nanometres (nm) is UV-C, commonly known as the germicidal region. All micro-organisms have been found to be susceptible to UV-C to a greater or lesser extent.

Industries such as brewing, beverage production, electronics and pharmaceuticals which require micro-organism free environments have been using UV for almost 50 years but it is only comparatively recently that it has been used as a primary disinfectant.

The main benefits offered by Ultraviolet technology that have led to its acceptance by many industries are space, capital and running costs and most importantly its ability to be non-selective in the destruction of bacteria, parasites and viruses.

Costs

The main cost benefits from installing a UV system is that there is: -

  • No requirement for a contact tank
  • No requirement for de-chlorination equipment
  • No requirement for pH adjustment
  • Normally no requirement for an additional building
  • A reduction in plant attendance for maintenance
  • Improved health and safety

The Ultraviolet market

Ultraviolet technology is used extensively in many industry sectors including: -

Ultraviolet light technology is also used in the destruction of contagious airborne microbes, serving many market sectors including: -

  • Medical facilities
  • Food manufacturing plants
  • Pharmaceutical laboratories
  • Meat processing plants
  • Bottling plants
  • Homeless shelters
  • Prisons
  • Travel entities
  • Ministry of Defence - with concern of sites vulnerable to terrorist attacks using anthrax and other potent, life threatening biological weapon systems.
